About Hadean Press

Hadean Press logo

Established in 2008 at the beginning of the solar year, Hadean Press Limited is a UK based small press producing some of the most exciting titles in modern occultism, publishing academic and independent scholarship in the areas of folklore, folk magic, and spellbooks.

Never oblivious to rising talent, in the years since its founding Hadean has introduced up and coming international authors to a discerning public, as well as bringing new offerings from more established but non-establishment authors, including Jake Stratton-Kent, David Rankine, Dr Alexander Cummins, and many more.

What We Publish

Our titles are meant for academics and practioners alike. From Scandinavian trolldom to Brazilian Quimbanda, Renaissance necromancy, or the art and craft of the goes, the Hadean catalogue caters to those curious about the long history and practice of magic.

Guides to the Underworld

Pamphlets, said to have appeared in the late Elizabethan period in a form recognisable to us now, are considered scurrilous bits of paper filled with subversions and remonstrances. In our Guides to the Underworld series we adhere to:

‘the second idea of the radix of the word Pamphlet... that it takes its derivations from παν, all, and φιλεω, I love, signifying a thing beloved by all; for a pamphlet being of a small portable bulk, and of no great price, is adapted to every one's understanding and reading.’ (Curiosities of Literature, and the Literary Character Illustrated, Disraeli & Griswold, 1846, p. 91)

Those days are long gone, but Hadean Press intends to keep the pamphlet tradition alive within the occult community, where 'subversions and remonstrances' thrive in discourse and in print.

Who We Are

Managing Director: Erzebet Barthold is a member of the Independent Publishers Guild, the Societas Magica, and the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism. She also manages Papaveria Press, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hadean Press dealing in mythic prose, poetry, and folklore. She has been involved in the industry in one form or another since 2001, as both an author and a publisher, and is an alumni of the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education.

Publishing Assistant: Lucy Greenwood is a member of Dragonoak, an active coven based in South Wales, and is particularly interested in eco-magick and folk magic. She holds an MA in English and her academic research is in the fields of ecocriticism, and post-apocalyptic and pastoral literature. Lucy is also the Community Liaison for Magickal Women & Company.

Operations Manager: Chris Carr (aka Dis). Chris has a long history in the UK print industry, and has been a first-hand witness to the digital print revolution by first servicing and then supporting what Erzebet likes to call ‘battleship printers’, working for RICOH as a Production Print Specialist and finally Workflow Solutions Consultant at Konica Minolta. Now, in addition to his work for Hadean Press, he creates under the name Papa Hemlock.

Finance Manager: Geoff Greenwood is Treasurer of the Pre-Raphaelite Society and has two decades of experience running the financial aspects of charity, events, and healthcare businesses, though his first employments were at local games shops where he developed his lifelong interest in fantasy, science-fiction, and RPGs, a library of which now robustly support the ceiling of his house. Genealogical research and presentation forms a final pillar of interest, rediscovering untold stories of historical individuals lost to time.

Editor-in-Chief: David Rankine is an author, esoteric researcher and magician who lives in Spain with his wife, artist and tattooist Rosa Laguna. He has been making major contributions to the modern occult revival since the 1980s through lectures, workshops, presentations, articles, and books. His esoteric expertise covers a wide range of topics, including the Western Esoteric Traditions, especially the Qabalah, the Grimoire tradition, Greco-Egyptian magic and Ceremonial Magic, as well as British Folklore and European Mythology.

Assistant Editor: Brian Johnson is a freelance writer, translator, humanities scholar, and editor, with experience creating content for publications ranging from peer-reviewed academic journals to tabletop roleplaying games. A life-long gamer and reader of fantasy and speculative fiction, Brian has a keen interest in RPGs and other forms of entertainment as vehicles for storytelling and creative exploration, and he is focused on helping writers, game designers, and other innovative individuals realize their unique creative visions.

Proofreader/editor: Matt Moreash is a polymathic researcher, a former private investigator, and a graduate of the University of King’s College with honours in Social Anthropology. He is also a voracious reader, a lifelong student of human behaviour, and a firm advocate of the Oxford comma. He lives in a library amongst artifacts of collapse and destruction.

Social Media Manager: Rosa Laguna is an artist graduated in Fine Arts at the University of Seville in 2012 and a professional tattooist since 2013, working in international tattoo conventions like the Saint Brieuc Salon du Tatouage. She has also been interested in the occult and magic since an early age and she has a passion for exploring art and tattoos within an esoteric context, both in theory and practice. If you see something gorgeous go by on our Instagram, that is all Rosa.

Video Production Manager: Mat Hadfield is a freelance videographer, proofreader and language teacher living in Ehime, Japan. He graduated from Staffordshire University with honours in Film Production Technology in 2008 after focusing on becoming a visual-effects producer. He has since spent over a decade teaching English as a foreign language as a means to fund his explorations of Asia and his insatiable hunger for more books. Mat has a particular love for the Graeco-Egyptian and Grimoire strands of occult thought and practice.
